Previous Meetings

Our group has been meeting since January 2003. Some members have been attending for most of that time and others for various shorter lengths of time. We try to create a space that feels supportive enough for people to share at whatever level they feel comfortable.

We strive to create an environment in which individual differences and the contributions of all participants are recognised and valued.  Once you join the group, your voice and your views are equally important to that of a long-standing member.

We have a Coordinating Group (CG) which includes a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer, plus other CG members. The CG is responsible for the practical matters involved in the running of the group. Anyone is welcome to join us.

Discussion Topics

Over the years we have discussed numerous themes from a person-centred perspective. This is a small sample:

  • Boundaries
  • Anger
  • The here and now
  • Authority
  • Inclusivity
  • Self esteem
  • Sex
  • Death
  • Being myself
  • Relationship expectations
  • Control

We have occasionally invited professional people to facilitate for one of the meetings. Also, we have organised training sessions and workshops on a range of topics, including focusing, breath, perception work and critical thinking.

We are always open to ideas from members about areas to improve our personal growth and continuing our professional development.

Suggested Reading

If you are not in counsellor training but have an interest in the person-centred approach, you may want to read something about it in order to learn more about the core conditions of Congruence, Empathy and Unconditional Positive Regard.

Carl Rogers is a good place to start and often the first book recommended is On Becoming a Person. Or you might enjoy The Carl Rogers Reader, edited by Howard Kirschenbaum and Valerie Land Henderson.

You may also want to try:

  • Person Centred Therapy Today, by Dave Mearns and Brian Thorne
  • Person-Centred Counselling in a Nutshell, by Roger Casemore
  • Learning and Being in Person Centred Counselling, by Tony Merry
